Although Islamic laws on inheritance based on Quran grants
equal rights to both male and female heir of the deceased, there is no
unanimity among the Islamic scholars of Indonesia in granting equal property
rights for the women. There are difference of opinion among the scholars due to differences in interpreting the inheritance laws mentioned in the Islamic verses. While the Imam of the Sunni Muslim bans the daughter’s ability to block
the opportunities of inheritance in case of dispute, Shia Muslim laws are
conceding equal rights to the girl child also. Proper interpretation and
understanding of the original version stated in the holy book would avoid
disputes.
